Questions
What people ask
How many extra calories do you need in pregnancy?
ACOG puts it at about 340 extra calories a day in the second trimester and about 450 in the third. In the first trimester you usually need none. Carrying twins or more adds to that, so ask your prenatal team. This week lands at about 2,260 to 2,350 calories, which fits the second and third trimester for many people.
How many calories is this meal plan?
About 2,261 to 2,345 calories a day, with 118 to 166 grams of protein and 34 to 38 grams of fiber. Your needs depend on your size, your activity and how far along you are, so scale portions up or down with your prenatal team.
Can I drink coffee while pregnant?
ACOG describes less than 200 mg of caffeine a day as moderate, about one 12 oz cup of coffee, and says that amount does not appear to be a major factor in miscarriage or preterm birth. Tea, soda and chocolate count too. Ask your team if you are unsure.
Which foods should I avoid during pregnancy?
Raw and undercooked meat, fish and eggs, raw sprouts, unpasteurized milk and soft cheese made with it, and all alcohol. Heat deli meat until it steams before eating it. For fish, the FDA and EPA advice is 2 to 3 servings of 4 ounces a week from the best choices list, and none of shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish or bigeye tuna.
Is sushi okay when pregnant?
Not raw fish. Rolls made with cooked fish or vegetables, such as cooked shrimp, are fine if the fish is cooked through and on the FDA best choices list. Skip raw tuna, raw salmon, sashimi and ceviche until after pregnancy.
Which nutrients matter most in pregnancy?
Folate, iron, calcium, iodine, choline and omega-3 fats. ACOG lists daily targets of 600 micrograms of folic acid, 27 milligrams of iron, 1,000 milligrams of calcium, 220 micrograms of iodine and 450 milligrams of choline. Calcium is 1,300 milligrams if you are 14 to 18. Food covers part of that. Ask your clinician what prenatal vitamin they want you taking, and how much.
What can I eat when nausea makes food hard?
Smaller amounts more often, and plain foods such as toast, crackers, plain yogurt, rice and bananas. Keep fluids going between meals. If you cannot keep food or fluids down for a day, call your prenatal team.
How does Alma help during pregnancy?
Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds, and Alma estimates the protein, fiber and calories on the plate. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index, which makes it easy to see whether a day covered protein, greens and whole grains.
