Gestational diabetes meal plan, carbs spread all day.
A week of meals for gestational diabetes, with carbs spread across four meals and about 2,000 to 2,200 calories a day. Every food here follows pregnancy food safety advice. Alma can fit it to your goal.
Built from ADA Standards of Care and ACOG advice.

The rules
Three habits do most of the work
Spread carbs over the whole day
Four meals here, each with protein. Ask your care team if you need a bedtime snack.
Protein and fiber at every meal
Each meal pairs its carbs with protein and fiber, which slows the rise.
Keep breakfast smaller
Morning readings run higher, so breakfast carries fewer carbs than dinner.

Questions
What people ask
How many carbs a day should you eat with gestational diabetes?
The ADA's Standards of Care cite a minimum of 175 grams of carbohydrate a day in pregnancy, and this week runs about 170 to 220 grams, spread across four meals. The Standards also say there is no single ideal split of carbs, protein and fat, so your care team sets the number that fits your readings and your medications.
How many calories is this meal plan?
About 2,020 to 2,160 calories a day, with 16 to 53 grams of protein at each meal and 34 to 42 grams of fiber a day. Scale portions to your needs, and ask your care team how many calories they want you eating in the second and third trimester.
Do I need a bedtime snack?
Ask your care team. The ADA's gestational diabetes handout describes three meals and two to three snacks a day, and your team may want a snack before bed. This plan has four meals; a cup of milk with a few whole-grain crackers or a small apple with peanut butter would fit if they do.
What is a good breakfast with gestational diabetes?
Keep it to about 30 grams of carbs or less, with protein and fiber. The seven breakfasts in this week land between 25 and 29 grams, with eggs, cottage cheese or Greek yogurt alongside fruit and whole grains. Check your reading two hours after eating and let your care team adjust from there.
Is this plan safe if I take insulin?
Talk with your care team before you start. If you take insulin, a change in carbs changes what your insulin does, and low blood sugar is the main risk. Your team may adjust your plan or ask you to check your meter more often for the first week. Nothing on this page replaces their targets.
Which foods are safe during pregnancy?
Cook meat, poultry and fish through, and cook eggs until both white and yolk are firm. Skip unpasteurized milk and any soft cheese made with it, and heat deli meat until it steams. The FDA and EPA advice is 2 to 3 servings of 4 ounces a week from its best choices, such as salmon, cod, tilapia, shrimp or canned light tuna. This week has 3. Avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish and bigeye tuna. No alcohol, and caffeine under 200 mg a day, which ACOG calls moderate.
How many calories does pregnancy add?
ACOG puts it at about 340 extra calories a day in the second trimester and about 450 in the third, with none extra in the first. That is roughly a glass of milk and half a sandwich. Your care team can tell you what that means for you.
How does Alma help with gestational diabetes?
Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds, and Alma estimates the carbs, fiber and protein on the plate. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index, so the pattern on this page is easy to keep an eye on between appointments.
