H. pylori meal plan, while medicine does its job.

H. pylori is cleared with antibiotics and acid-reducing medicine, not with food. This week is built to keep eating comfortable during and after the course, at about 1,800 calories a day. Alma can fit it to your goal.

Built from ACG and NIDDK guidance.

A clay bowl of oatmeal with banana slices, a small bowl of kefir with banana and a plate of baked chicken with rice and carrots

The rules

Three habits for a settled stomach

  • Medicine clears the infection

Antibiotics and acid-reducing medicine, taken exactly as prescribed.

  • Eat on a steady schedule

Meals and a snack at similar times, in portions that sit well.

  • Go easy on what bothers you

Very spicy, fried and fatty food, alcohol and coffee, if they set you off.

Sample week

Seven days of gentle, steady meals

About 1,700 to 1,850 calories a day. Scale portions to your needs. Find your number

Finish the whole course and go to the follow-up test. Some H. pylori antibiotics do not mix with alcohol, so ask your pharmacist. Vomit with blood, severe belly pain, or tarry black stools with dizziness need urgent care.

Questions

What people ask

What should you eat when you have H. pylori?

Regular meals with fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lean protein and plain yogurt suit most people. There is no special H. pylori diet: NIDDK says doctors do not recommend a special diet for ulcers. This week aims at comfortable eating while the medicine does its work.

Can food get rid of H. pylori?

No. H. pylori is cleared with antibiotics plus acid-reducing medicine prescribed by a clinician, and the American College of Gastroenterology recommends that course for anyone infected. Food helps you feel better and eat well during it, but it does not clear the infection.

Should you avoid coffee and spicy food?

Only if they bother you. Very spicy meals, fried and fatty food, coffee and alcohol are common personal triggers rather than universal ones. Cut back while symptoms are sharp, then add one back at a time and note what happens in a food and symptom diary.

Is yogurt okay during the antibiotic course?

Yogurt and kefir are easy protein and are fine for most people during the course. They do not clear the infection, so keep taking the medicine exactly as prescribed. If dairy upsets your stomach during the course, set it aside and ask your clinician what else to use.

How long does the medicine take?

Your clinician sets the length. ACG describes a 2-week course of 2 to 4 medicines, followed by a breath or stool test at least 4 weeks after you finish to confirm the infection is gone. Do not stop early because you feel better.

How many calories is this meal plan?

About 1,700 to 1,850 calories a day, with about 95 to 135 grams of protein and 20 to 40 grams of fiber. Portions are a starting point: eat what sits well and leave the rest. The calorie calculator gives you a number to work from.

How can Alma help with an H. pylori diet?

Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds, which is handy when you are eating on a medicine schedule. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index. Alma builds a plan around your goal and the foods you like.
