Clean eating meal plan, defined plainly.

Clean eating has no official definition, so read it as shorthand for mostly whole foods cooked at home, with fewer packaged snacks, added sugars and salty foods. Here is a week at about 2,000 calories. Alma can fit it to your goal.

Built from Dietary Guidelines and Harvard advice.

The rules

Three habits, no forbidden foods

  • Cook most of it yourself

Start from plain ingredients and let the seasoning do the work.

  • Fewer packaged snacks

Swap the bag for fruit, nuts or yogurt. Nothing is off limits.

  • Build plates from whole food

Vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains fill most of the plate.

Questions

What people ask

What does clean eating actually mean?

There is no official definition. In practice it means choosing mostly whole or minimally processed foods, cooking more often, and having fewer packaged snacks, sweet drinks and very salty foods. Nothing is forbidden, and no single food makes a day good or bad.

Is clean eating just a diet with a nicer name?

It can be, if it turns into rules about which foods are allowed. This plan has no banned list. The Dietary Guidelines point you toward whole foods and away from highly processed ones, rather than naming forbidden foods, which is a lower-stress way to think about it.

Do I have to give up all packaged food?

No. Canned beans, frozen vegetables, canned fish, plain yogurt and whole grain bread are all processed to some degree and all belong in this week. The foods to have less often are the ones with a lot of added sugar, sodium or refined flour per serving.

Can you eat meat on a clean eating plan?

Yes. Chicken, pork and beef appear at six meals this week, in portions of 4 to 6 oz, with vegetables and whole grains alongside. Fish covers three meals, and beans, lentils or eggs cover the rest.

Is clean eating expensive?

It does not have to be. Dried or canned beans, oats, frozen berries, frozen fish, cabbage, carrots and squash carry much of this week. Cooking one pot of soup or a tray of roasted vegetables covers two meals.

How many calories is this meal plan?

Between 1,970 and 2,045 calories a day, with 98 to 128 g of protein and 28 to 50 g of fiber. Your needs depend on your size, age and activity, so scale portions up or down. The calorie calculator gives you a starting number.

How does Alma help me eat this way?

Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds. Every meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index, which rewards vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans and fish, so the score follows the same idea as this page.
