Nordic diet meal plan, rye, berries, salmon.
The healthy Nordic diet is a Northern European pattern built on rye, oats, barley, berries, cabbage, root vegetables, fish and canola oil. Here is a week of meals at about 1,850 calories a day, with swaps for a US grocery store. Alma can fit it to your goal.
Built from AHA and Dietary Guidelines advice.

The rules
Three staples carry the pattern
Rye, oats and barley first
Whole grains at most meals are the base of the plate here.
Fish two to three times a week
Salmon, herring and mackerel, plus canned fish when fresh is pricey.
Berries, cabbage and roots
Sturdy produce that keeps, with canola oil in place of butter.

Questions
What people ask
What is the Nordic diet?
It is a Northern European eating pattern built on whole-grain rye, oats and barley, berries, cabbage, root vegetables, beans and peas, fatty fish, canola oil and low-fat dairy. It looks a lot like the Mediterranean diet with different staples, and it is set up for foods that grow in a cold climate.
How is the Nordic diet different from the Mediterranean diet?
The fat and the grains change. The Mediterranean pattern leans on olive oil and wheat, and the Nordic pattern leans on canola oil, rye, oats and barley. Both put vegetables, beans and fish near the center of the plate, and both go light on red meat.
How many calories is this meal plan?
About 1,750 to 1,950 calories a day, with 110 to 149 g of protein and 32 to 43 g of fiber. Your needs depend on your size, age and how much you move, so scale portions up or down. The calorie calculator gives you a starting number.
Where do I buy rye bread and lingonberries in the US?
Rye crispbread sits in the cracker aisle of most supermarkets and keeps for months. Frozen berries stand in for lingonberries, and canned or jarred herring and mackerel cover the fish. If you find fresh rye bread, slice and freeze it.
Is the Nordic diet linked with better cholesterol and blood pressure?
In the NORDIET trial, 86 adults with raised cholesterol ate a healthy Nordic diet or a control diet for 6 weeks. The Nordic diet was linked with improved blood lipids and lower blood pressure in the report by Adamsson and colleagues, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2011. It was a short trial in people with high cholesterol, so it does not show the same result for everyone. The American Heart Association also recommends two servings of fish a week.
Can I follow the Nordic diet without fish?
The fish is the main source of omega-3 fats here. If you skip it, canola oil, walnuts, flaxseed and chia seeds cover some of the same fats, and eggs and dairy still supply protein. You will need to plan those in at most meals, not just once a week.
How do I know if I am sticking to it?
Log your meals in Alma by photo, voice or text, in about 10 seconds. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, which draws on Harvard’s Alternate Healthy Eating Index, so rye, oats, berries and fish all count toward the number.
