Low histamine meal plan, cooked and eaten fresh.

A low histamine diet cuts back on aged, fermented and processed foods, where histamine tends to build up. Here is a week of freshly cooked meals at about 1,600 calories a day. Alma can fit it to your goal.

Built from Cleveland Clinic low histamine guidance.

The rules

Three habits carry this week

  • Fresh, whole, cooked at home

Fresh meat, fish and vegetables carry less histamine than aged or canned.

  • Skip the aged and the fermented

Aged cheese, deli meats, canned fish, pickled foods and alcohol are the usual sources.

  • Keep a food and symptom diary

Track what you eat and how you feel, then test one food back at a time.

Questions

What people ask

What foods are high in histamine?

Cleveland Clinic lists alcohol, aged, smoked and blue cheeses, fermented foods like sauerkraut, processed meat, canned fish, tomatoes, spinach, eggplant, citrus, bananas, strawberries, nuts and legumes. Limits differ from person to person.

How long should you stay on a low histamine diet?

Cleveland Clinic describes stopping possible triggers for a few weeks, then adding them back one by one while you keep a food and symptom diary. How long to run it is a question for your care team.

Is there a test for histamine intolerance?

Not a validated one. Cleveland Clinic notes that not all providers recognize histamine intolerance and that no test is proven. A provider may look for other causes, and a food diary helps.

Can you eat leftovers on a low histamine diet?

Cook fresh where you can. Cleveland Clinic says bacteria raise histamine as food ages, so store cooked food cold or frozen. It gives no set number of days, so ask your dietitian what fits you.

What can you eat for breakfast on a low histamine diet?

Oats with milk and pear, eggs on whole-grain toast, or rice pudding with peaches all fit. Cleveland Clinic lists egg white among foods that bother some people, so swap eggs out if they do.

How many calories is this meal plan?

About 1,555 to 1,680 calories a day, with 79 to 119 grams of protein and about 25 grams of fiber. Your needs depend on your size, age and activity, so scale portions up or down. The calorie calculator gives you a starting number.

How does Alma help with a low histamine diet?

Log each meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds, and every meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100 that draws on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index. Alma builds a plan around your goal and the foods you like, and the food and symptom diary keeps the trial on track.
