Soft food plan, easy on the mouth.

After dental work, a sore jaw or mouth surgery, everything needs to be soft, moist and easy to swallow. This week is built that way, with protein at most meals, at about 1,800 calories. Alma can fit it to your goal.

Built from Cleveland Clinic soft food guidance.

The rules

Three habits while chewing hurts

  • Protein at most meals

Eggs, fish, yogurt, soft cheese or tofu, across four meals a day.

  • Moisture makes it easy

Sauce, broth, milk or gravy with every plate. Dry food is the problem.

  • Blend, mash and puree

A blender turns most dinners into something you can swallow.

Questions

What people ask

What can you eat on a soft food diet?

Eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, smoothies, soups, mashed potato and sweet potato, flaked fish, ground meat in sauce, tofu, soft cooked vegetables, ripe banana, avocado and soft pasta. The Cleveland Clinic adds soft white bread, plain crackers and pudding. Everything should be moist, and easy to mash with a fork.

How long do you stay on a soft food diet?

That depends on what was done and on your surgeon or dentist, who sets the timeline. The Cleveland Clinic notes that a multivitamin or fortified drink may be worth asking about if you stay on a soft food diet for more than two to three weeks.

How much protein is in this meal plan?

This week runs about 85 to 110 g of protein a day. That is this plan's number, not a published target, so ask your dentist or dietitian what you need. Eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, flaked fish, ground meat and tofu are the easiest soft sources.

Can I drink through a straw?

Ask your surgeon or dentist. Instructions on straws, temperature and liquid only days differ by procedure, so follow theirs over anything on this page.

What foods should I avoid with a sore mouth?

Nuts, seeds, chips, crusty bread, raw vegetables, popcorn and tough chewy meat. They either scratch or need real chewing. The Cleveland Clinic also suggests skipping tough, fibrous vegetables such as raw or dark leafy greens, and berries with seeds. If hot, cold or spicy food stings, ease off it. Soft and moist is the easy rule.

How many calories is this meal plan?

About 1,700 to 1,900 calories a day, with about 85 to 110 grams of protein. It is easy to under eat when chewing hurts, so watch the totals rather than assuming soup is enough. The calorie calculator gives a starting number.

Can Alma help me follow this plan?

Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds, which is easier than typing when your mouth hurts. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard’s Alternate Healthy Eating Index, and the protein total shows whether you hit your target. Alma also builds a plan around your goal and the foods you like.
