Hashimoto meal plan, food, not fixes.

No diet changes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and this plan does not claim to. It is a balanced week of weeknight meals with protein, fiber, fish, eggs and dairy, at about 1,700 calories a day. Alma can fit it to your goal.

Built from ATA and NIH dietary supplement guidance advice.

A clay plate of eggs, a few Brazil nuts, a piece of tuna and a bowl of rice with vegetables

The rules

Three habits, no miracle foods

  • Food will not change thyroid levels

The ATA lists levothyroxine for low thyroid function. Food just fills your needs.

  • Skip kelp and iodine pills

Iodized salt in normal cooking is fine. Ask your clinician before kelp or iodine pills.

  • Space out your tablet

Take it on an empty stomach, and ask how far to space it from calcium, iron and soy.

Sample week

Seven days of Hashimoto meals

About 1,600 to 1,800 calories a day. Scale portions to your needs. Find your number

If you take levothyroxine, ask your clinician or pharmacist when to take it around food, coffee, calcium, iron and soy. Do not change your dose on your own, and ask before taking iodine or kelp supplements.

Questions

What people ask

Is there a Hashimoto diet that works?

No. The American Thyroid Association describes thyroid hormone replacement with levothyroxine when Hashimoto's lowers thyroid function, and does not list a diet on its Hashimoto's page. A good week can cover protein, fiber and nutrients and keep meals steady, nothing more.

Should you go gluten-free with Hashimoto's?

Only if you have celiac disease. Ask your clinician about celiac testing before cutting gluten, since the blood test works best while you still eat it. Without celiac disease, this week includes whole grains and sourdough.

Can you eat soy with Hashimoto's?

Soy is fine as food. The ATA does list soy among the things that can block absorption of thyroid hormone, so ask your pharmacist how far to space soy foods from your tablet.

How much iodine is too much?

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says kelp products and iodine supplements can supply far more iodine than the body needs. Iodized salt in normal cooking is a usual source. If you take a multivitamin, check the label for iodine and ask your clinician.

Which foods have selenium?

Brazil nuts are very rich in selenium, so a small amount is plenty and more is not better. Fish, eggs, meat and whole grains also carry selenium. Ask your clinician before taking a selenium supplement.

How many calories is this meal plan?

About 1,600 to 1,800 calories a day, with 99 to 119 grams of protein and 23 to 43 grams of fiber. Your needs depend on your size, age and activity, so scale portions up or down. The calorie calculator gives you a starting number.

Can Alma help me follow this plan?

Log a meal by photo, voice or text in about 10 seconds. Each meal gets an Alma Score from 0 to 100, drawing on Harvard's Alternate Healthy Eating Index, which rewards the fish, vegetables and whole grains this week is built on. Alma also builds a plan around your goal and the foods you like.
