Compare sodium without the guesswork
On U.S. Nutrition Facts labels, 5% Daily Value or less is generally low and 20% or more is generally high. Compare the same serving amount before deciding between similar foods.
Food ideas and checks
- Read the serving size
- Check cups, pieces or grams at the top. The rest of the label refers to that serving.
- Check servings per pack
- Notice whether you will eat one or several. A package is not always one serving.
- Find sodium
- Read milligrams and % Daily Value. The U.S. Daily Value is 2,300 mg.
- Compare like with like
- Compare two soups or two breads. Different serving sizes can hide the difference.
- Scale to your portion
- Two labeled servings mean twice the listed sodium. Use the amount you actually eat.
- Keep the whole food in view
- Protein, fiber and other nutrients matter too. A low-sodium claim does not describe every part of a food.
