Choose a grab-and-go snack
Standing in front of the snack shelf? Compare two foods you would enjoy, using the same portion. This quick check works with ordinary supermarket snacks. A “high protein” claim is only one part of the label.
Food ideas and checks
- Choose the portion
- Check the serving size and servings per pack. Eating a whole two-serving bag doubles the listed amounts.
- Check protein
- Compare grams for the portion you plan to eat. A front-of-pack claim does not tell you everything.
- Look for fiber
- Check the fiber line, then the ingredients. Fruit, nuts and whole grains are useful starting points.
- Compare sodium
- Look at milligrams and % Daily Value. On U.S. labels, 5% DV or less is low; 20% or more is high.
- Think about storage
- Choose a snack you can store safely. Yogurt and other refrigerated foods need to stay cold.
- Make it something you want
- Try fruit with nuts, or vegetables with hummus. You can compare labels without finding one perfect snack.
